Understanding Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Procedure

Preparation: The patient is asked to refrain from eating or drinking for a few hours before the test to ensure accurate results.

Sedation: In some cases, a mild sedative may be administered to help the patient relax during the procedure.

Catheter insertion: A thin tube called a catheter is inserted through the patient's nose and positioned in the lower esophagus. This allows for the controlled delivery of acid during the test.

Acid introduction: A solution containing a mild acid, such as hydrochloric acid, is slowly infused through the catheter into the esophagus. The amount of acid introduced may vary depending on the patient's symptoms and medical history.

Observation period: After the acid is introduced, the patient is closely monitored for a specific duration, typically around 30 minutes. During this time, the patient's symptoms and any signs of acid reflux are carefully noted.

Evaluation: Based on the patient's response to the acid infusion, the doctor can assess whether the symptoms experienced are consistent with GERD or if an alternative diagnosis is more likely.
